North Carolina Postgame Notes
Release: 11/17/2013

• Carolina won its fourth consecutive game and improved to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the ACC with a 34-27 victory over Pitt.

• Carolina is now 5-3 all-time against the Panthers and has won the last two in Pittsburgh (2000 & 2013).

• Senior defensive end Kareem Martin recorded eight tackles, 3.5 sacks for 34 yards, forced two fumbles, recovered a fumble, broke up a pass and had two quarterback hurries. In the first half alone, he had six tackles, three sacks and forced a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Travis Hughes.

• Carolina's seven sacks today are the most since posting seven against ECU in 2012. It is the most in an ACC game since recording 10 vs. Wake Forest in 2000.

• Of Carolina's 36 touchdowns this season, 28 have been scored by freshmen or sophomores, including all four against Pitt. Sophomore QB Marquise Williams and freshman wide receiver/return man Ryan Switzer each scored twice.

• For the second consecutive week, freshman Ryan Switzer returned a punt for a touchdown. The Morgantown, W.Va., native returned a second quarter punt 65 yards and a fourth quarter punt 61 yards against Pitt. Last week, he had an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown against Virginia.

• Switzer tied the school record for most punt return touchdowns in a game with two. He had a 65-yarder in the second quarter and a 61-yarder in the fourth quarter with 4:46 remaining. The only other player in UNC history to score twice on punt returns was defensive tackle Andre Purvis who recovered two blocked punts in the end zone against Tulane in 1993. Statistically, both of those recovered punts are recorded as punt returns.

• Including his 85-yard punt return touchdown last week against Virginia, Switzer now holds the UNC single-season record for most punt return touchdowns with three. The previous record of two was held by six other players - Johnny Branch in 1930, Charlie Justice in 1948, Norris Davis in 1987, Andre Purvis in 1993, Bosley Allen in 2000 and Giovani Bernard in 2012.

• Sophomore quarterback Marquise Williams scored on runs of 16 and 10 yards in the first half. He is the first UNC quarterback to rush for two touchdowns in a game since Darian Durant in a 38-3 victory at Clemson in 2001. He is the first Tar Heel to score two rushing TDs in the same game since Romar Morris vs. MTSU earlier this year.

• Williams' first touchdown came on Carolina's second drive of the game and occurred two plays after he converted a 4th-and-9 with a 15-yard pass to Switzer. On the 76-yard scoring drive, Williams completed 4 of 6 pass attempts for 35 yards and ran seven times for 31 yards.

• Senior Terry Shankle made his first career sack when he dropped Pitt QB Tom Savage for a 12-yard loss in the second quarter. He added an 18-yard sack later in the quarter and finished the game eight tackles, three tackles for losses, two sacks and a pass breakup.

• Junior tight end Eric Ebron finished with three catches for 73 yards. He left the game in the second half with a shoulder injury, but later returned. He is now 108 receiving yards shy of the ACC record for receiving yards by a tight end held by Maryland's Vernon Davis (871 in 2005).

• True freshman Lucas Crowley made his first career start today. Russell Bodine, who has started the first nine games at center, started today at left guard in place of injured Caleb Peterson.

• Cornerback Tim Scott made his 30th career start today. He is one of five Tar Heels to start 30 games, joining OT James Hurst (46), DE Kareem Martin (38), S Tre Boston (37) and QB Bryn Renner (32).
