CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina sent graduating Tar Heels Kaitlyn Anderson, Kayla Berringer and Jovana Bejlica out in style with a solid 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 26-24) victory over Virginia Saturday.
Victoria McPherson tallied 14 kills and a season-high eight blocks, and Hayley McCokrle tallied 12 kills with five blocks as Carolina closed out home play with a win on Senior Night.
With the win, the #15 Tar Heels improve to 24-3, 13-3 for the season.
"This was a gutsy performance," head coach Joe Sagula said. "We played well, but Virginia played extremely well. This was a big win for us to keep our momentum, and coming from behind and being able to grind it out was significant for us."
"I'm really excited for our seniors to finish on such a great note at home and in front of such a great crowd," Sagula said.
Jasmine Burton tallied six kills, and Haley Kole added four to help the Cavaliers take set two, 25-22. Paige Neuenfeldt and Bjelica each posted four kills for Carolina, but Virginia took advantage of five key attack errors by the Tar Heels to even the match at 1-1.
Carolina bounced back to take set three 25-19 with a solid .370 team attack. McPherson posted five kills with two blocks for the Tar Heels, and Neuenfeldt added another five kills.
Down 19-14 in set four, UNC evened the set at 20-20 and held on to take the frame in extra points, 26-24, and wrap up the match victory. McPherson registered six more kills and three blocks in the final set while McCorkle notched five kills with three blocks while hitting .556.
