CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina women's golf coach Jan Mann announced the signing of two players who will join the Tar Heel team in the fall of 2014 - Lexi Harkins from Crystal Lake, Ill. and Bryana Nguyen from Columbia, Md.
"We are looking forward to having Lexi and Bryana join our Carolina family," says Mann. "I anticipate them stepping in as freshmen and making strong contributions to the UNC golf program on the golf course and in the classroom. They are both going to be excellent additions to our team."
Harkins, who attended Crystal Lake Central High School, enters Carolina with an impressive junior resume and is ranked 28th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings for 2014 graduates. A 2012 Rolex All-America, Harkins carded six AJGA top-5 finishes. She won the 2012 AJGA Lockton Kansas City Junior Champion and was a two-time qualifier for the U.S. Junior Girls Amateur. Harkins was the medalist qualifier for the 2013 U.S. Women's Amateur, advancing to the round of 16. She was MVP and captain of her high school team and was named to the honor roll all four years. In addition, she was a two-time HP Scholastic Junior All-America, 2012 and 2013.
Nguyen, who attended Atholton High School, is ranked 34th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings for 2014 graduates. She won the 2012 AJGA Under Armour/Steve Marino Championship and was the low medalist at the USGA 2013 Women's State Team Championship. Nguyen was a two-time champion at the Maryland Individual High School State Championship (2012 and 2013) and was selected Howard County Player of the Year all four years of her high school career. She is a three-time qualifier for the U.S. Junior Girls (2010, 2011, 2012), being the medalist in each of the qualifiers. Nguyen was a gold honor roll student thoughout high school and named to the Spanish and Math National Honor Society. She has participated in and is now a mentor in the First Tee Program in Howard County and is on the First Tee Junior Advisory Board. Nguyen played Pebble Beach with Fred Funk during the First Tee Open.
