CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina men's golf coach Andrew Sapp announced the signing of two top-10 players who will join the Tar Heels for the 2014-15 season - Ben Griffin of Chapel Hill, N.C., and William Register of Burlington, N.C.
"We are extremely excited about the Tar Heels we are signing for 2014," says Sapp. "These two young men not only have incredible resumes, but they are wonderful people and Tar Heels through and through. This is one of the best recruiting classes in the country this year and we are thrilled that Ben and William are coming to Carolina. When you can get one Top-10 player in the country, that is great, but this year we are signing two."
Griffin, who played at East Chapel Hill High School, is currently ranked fourth nationally and is a 2013 AJGA Rolex First Team All-America. He has 23 top-10 finishes in his amateur career including five wins, three in 2013. Griffin's championships came at the 2013 AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions, 2013 and 2011 NCHSAA 4A State Championships, 2013 U.S. Open Local Qualifying and 2011 U.S. Kids Golf - Teen World Championship. A three-time member of the All-State Team (2010, 2011, 2012), Griffin was named to the 2012 Gary Gilchrist Junior All-Star Team and 2011 All-Carolinas Team. He advanced to match play at the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur and advanced to the round of 16 at the 2012 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and the 2012 N.C. Amateur Match Play Championship.
"The combination of academics and athletics is unparalleled at the University of North Carolina and I am proud to finally be a part of the Tar Heel family," says Griffin.
"Ben has had a wonderful junior golf career, but in addition to that, he has played some great golf against college players and amateurs throughout the past two summers," says Sapp. "He will come into college golf extremely well prepared. He was honored as a first team AJGA Rolex All-America and won one of the most prestigious junior events in the country last summer, the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions. He is also a two-time 4A State Champion coming out of East Chapel Hill High."
Register, who played at Walter Williams High School, is currently ranked seventh nationally and is a 2013 AJGA Rolex All-America second team member and a 2013 AJGA HP Scholastic All-America. Register, the brother of current Tar Heel junior golfer Robert Register, carded 12 top-10 finishes as an amateur including three wins. He won the championship at the 2013 AJGA IZOD Championship, the 2013 AJGA Exide Technologies Junior Open and the 2013 USGA Junior Amateur Qualifier. Register was named to the All-State team in 2011 and 2012, selected 2011 Mid-State 3A Conference Player of the Year and named Alamance County Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012. Register was medalist and earned the #1 seed at the 2012 N.C. Junior Boys Match Play and advanced to match play at the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur.
"It has always been a childhood dream of mine to play college golf at UNC," says Register. "I am excited to have that opportunity and look forward to my future at UNC."
"William won two AJGA tournaments this year and was named to the AJGA Rolex All-America Second Team, as well as an AJGA HP Scholastic All-America," says Sapp. "He is very familiar with our golf program and should transition in very well. He has continued to improve over the past few years and is not only a top 10 player in the country, but an incredible student at Walter Williams High School."
