OMAHA, NEB. - North Carolina golfer Andy Sajevic has been selected Nebraska Amateur Golfer of the Year by the Nebraska Golf Association (NGA). This marks the second time Sajevic has won the award as he was also chosen Nebraska's top golfer in 2010.
After not playing in the 2012 Nebraska Match Play Championship, Sajevic, a senior from Fremont, made a big comeback in 2013, battling through a tough field at Elks Country Club in Columbus to defeat Norfolk's Lance Lawson 4 and 2 in the final. The win was Sajevic's first men's match play title. Then, a month later, Sajevic reclaimed his Nebraska Amateur title, finishing the 2013 Championship as the only player under par. Sajevic's three-stroke win at ArborLinks was his third Nebraska Amateur win in four years.
In addition to his NGA success, Sajevic had success in member club competitions, finishing as the runner-up at the Indian Creek Invitational at Indian Creek Golf Course in Elkhorn, and tied for fourth at the Michelob Classic at Riverside Golf Club in Grand Island. Sajevic also competed as a member of the NGA squad in the Nebraska Cup Matches against the state's top golf professionals.
Sajevic played in three tournaments for the Tar Heels this fall. His top outing came at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate where he tied for 13th place after firing a 2-over-par 218 total, competing as an individual. He also finished 52nd at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational and tied for 64th at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
Previously, Sajevic was recognized as the NGA's Junior Amateur Golfer of the Year twice (2007 & 2009). The 2013 Nebraska Amateur Golfer of the Year award is his second (2010). Andy's father, John Sajevic, is a two-time recipient of the award (1989 & 1996). They were the first father-son combination to both receive the state's top golfer award, and both now own two such awards.
Sajevic will receive his award Friday at the Nebraska Golf Association's Fall Awards Banquet. In addition, the NGA will recognize the Senior Amateur Golfer of the Year, Junior Amateur Golfer of the Year, Girls Amateur Golfer of the Year and each of its 2013 amateur golf champions.
The Nebraska Golf Association, founded in 1966, conducts the state's amateur golf championships, governs its member clubs, and serves as the handicapping and course rating authority for its members and its member clubs. The NGA has 23,000 members and 165 member clubs.
