NEW YORK, N.Y. - University of North Carolina sophomore Brett Clark won his opening singles match Thursday in the 2013 United States Tennis Association/ Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Clark, a sophomore from Naples, Fla., defeated 40th-ranked Malte Stropp of Mississippi State University Thursday night in his opening match of the tournament 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
The Tar Heel sophomore improved to 16-4 on the fall season with the singles win. He advances to a Round of 16 match on Friday against seventh-seeded Winston Lin of the host school, Columbia. Lin, ranked 54th nationally, defeated 23rd-ranked Alex Sarkissian of Pepperdine by a decisive 6-0, 6-2 margin earlier on Thursday.
Clark and Lin will play their second round singles match Friday at 1:30 p.m.
All action this weekend is being played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadow, N.Y.
