UNC men's fencers claimed the top three spots in the sabre competition Sunday as North Carolina opened the season at the Temple Open in Philadelphia. After the women's squad competed on Saturday with four fencers finishing in the top 10 in their respective weapons, the men matched that with the top three in sabre and a fifth-place finish in epee.
Senior Sam Austin won the men's sabre title, with senior Nate Wiecha second and freshman Mason Erb tied for third. Freshman Evan Philpot took 10th, sophomore Gordon Long 14th, senior Jonathan Blake 16th, and sophomore Kevin March 54th.
In epee, freshman Michael Gopman-Slonim was fifth, sophomore Collins Allison 11th, senior Hayden Haberle 18th, junior Parker Williams 19th, senior Daniel Giles 25th, senior Maxwell Tice-Lewis 27th, and sophomore Cody Barnes 36th.
In foil, freshman Deven Desai was 12th, sophomore Alex Burte 14th, freshman Ezra Baeli-Wang 23rd. sophomore Jacob Bernstein 24th and freshman James Wheeler 29th.
