CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Led by Jovana Bjelica's 16 kills and two blocks, the No. 10 Tar Heels swept Wake Forest Saturday (25-15, 25-20, 25-21) to improve to 16-1 overall and 5-1 in ACC play.
Lauren Adkins added another 12 kills and a block, and Paige Neuenfeldt and Hayley McCorkle combined for 15 kills and six blocks as Carolina rebounded from its first loss of the season to Duke on Friday.
"I thought it was great to come back and get a win after our first loss of the season," head coach Joe Sagula said. "That was important for us to get a little confidence back. We knew it was a big weekend coming in, so getting the win tonight allows us to keep our eye on where we want to be at the end of the season."
"There are things we need to continue to work on and get better at, and I'm looking forward to practice this week and the challenges we have ahead. We're a better team after this weekend," Sagula said.
Wake Forest got off to a quick start in the opening frame, but the Tar Heels took the set with a decisive 25-15 score. Bjelica tallied eight kills- more than Wake Forest's team total of seven- and a block, and Adkins added four kills as Carolina had a .333 team attack for that frame.
The Demon Deacons came on a little stronger in set two, but UNC won 25-20 as Neuenfeldt posted three kills and two blocks, and McCorkle and Kayla Berringer each added three kills apiece.
Even at 19-19, a closing 6-2 run helped UNC take the third set 25-21 as Bjelica and Adkins each tallied a final six kills and a block. McCorkle added two kills and two blocks to help Carolina wrap up the win.
