CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - On the heels of last Friday's awards banquet and last Saturday's Blue/White Alumni scrimmage, the North Carolina men's lacrosse team hits the road Saturday for its annual fall ball game the with the Ohio State Buckeyes. The annual scrimmage benefits the Michael R. Breschi Scholarship Fund at OSU, named for the late son of current UNC head coach Joe Breschi, who was the head mento of the Buckeyes from 1997-2008.
The Tar Heels and the Bucketes will meet at noon Saturday at Calvert Hall College High School which is located at 8102 LaSalle Rd in Towson, Md. Many past Calvert Hall players are on the rosters of both competing teams and Calvert Hall coach Bryan Kelly is a Tar Heel alumnus and played with Coach Breschi at UNC.
Admission is $5 and proceeds from the game will be donated to the MRB Scholarship Fund at Ohio State. This marks the third successive year that Ohio State and North Carolina are facing off in a fall scrimmage in the Baltimore area. Prior to that the teams had a long-standing regular season series that benefitted the Breschi Scholarship Fund.
The Michael R. Breschi Memorial Scholarship, one of the largest memorial endowed scholarships in the Ohio State Department of Athletics, was created in memory of Michael R. Breschi, the son of former Ohio State lacrosse coach Joe Breschi and his wife, Julie. Michael died tragically in March 2004 when he was just 3 years old. The Michael Robert Breschi Scholarship is given to an Ohio State senior lacrosse player every year who best exemplifies the spirit of Michael. The scholarship recipient for this season will be announced following the game Sunday.
