Navy Slugs Its Way Past Blue In FWS Game Two
Release: 10/05/2013

CHAPEL HILL --- The Navy team took the second game of the 2013 Fall World Series on Saturday afternoon, courtesy of a 12-7 victory over the opposing Blue squad.

Freshman pitcher Zac Gallen got the start for the Navy team and went seven solid innings to get the win.

Both teams showed their offenses early, taking advantage of the young pitchers as they settled in.

The Navy team struck in the top of the first inning when Taylore Cherry issued a four-pitch leadoff walk to Michael Massardo, who promptly stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Another walk and a pop up brought Skye Bolt to the plate, who reached on a close grounder to shortstop, scoring Massardo to give the Navy squad a 1-0 lead.

They wouldn't hold the lead for long though, as the Blue team would get some production of its own in the bottom of the inning, stringing two singles and a double together for two runs before adding a third later in the inning to jump out in front of the Navy squad 3-1.

The Navy team answered with a run in the second inning to bring the lead back down to one, but the Blue team countered in the bottom of the inning, scoring two more to increase its lead to 5-2.

A double for Bolt in the third inning once again lessened the gap, before another single by the sophomore center fielder in the fourth inning added his third RBI of the day to tie the score at 5-5. The Navy team then took the lead off a double by catcher Korey Dunbar.

After two shaky innings to start the contest, Gallen settled in to dominate for the next five innings, giving up just two more runs off a home run to Tyler Ramirez in the fifth to tie the score at 7.

The Navy team broke the tie in the top of the seventh inning with another RBI single by Massardo, his second RBI of the day and fourth of the series to give them a 9-8 lead and put the Navy team up for good.

To cap their second victory of the FWS, the Navy team scored once more courtesy of a three-run home run by Michael Russell in the top of the ninth for the final score of 12-7.

Left-hander Henry Sisson added two innings of scoreless and hitless relief for the Navy team, while A.J. Bogucki allowed one run in his 2.2 inning appearance for the Blue team.

The Blue team looks to avoid a sweep in the opening series when the 2013 Fall World Series continues on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
