The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team has been active on the community service front during the fall semester of 2013.
Following are details of events the Tar Heels have been involved in. Junior midfielder Joe Costigan contributed the article to GoHeels.com.
Get Heeled 5K
The 2013 Get Heeled 5K was an outstanding 5K fundraiser that raised $54,000 for UNC Lineberger's Pediatric Oncology Clinic. Our entire team was fortunate to be a part of over 100 UNC Student-Athletes to serve as volunteers. At the event we cheered on over 1,000 participants and finished the race with two very special young girls that are battling cancer. The impact our lacrosse team was able to leave on numerous individuals through our support and help at the event will hopefully help them continue to fight and beat cancer. The 2013 Get Heeled 5K was a huge success that our team will continue to support in the future years.
Carolina Dreams: UNC vs. ECU
The Carolina Dreams program partners Carolina student-athletes with patients from the North Carolina Children's Hospital by hosting patients and their families for a tailgate and a UNC sporting event. On Saturday, September 28th, members of our team hosted a family for the football game against East Carolina University. The family was overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness our team members showed and will forever remember their Carolina Dreams experience. The members of our team that participated were Jake Bailey, Evan Connell, Joe Costigan, Patrick Kelly, Mark Rizzo, Spencer Parks, Shane Simpson, Michael Tagliaferri, and Cam Wood.
Redshirt freshman Michael Tagliaferri said, "It was amazing to see how much it meant to the kids to go and see their first football game with us. It opened my eyes and allowed me to appreciate the little things in life, and felt great to know that donating a day of my time means the world to those kids and their parents."
Carolina Dreams was a great opportunity that allowed multiple members of our team to give back to the Chapel Hill Community.
