CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 14 Tar Heels swept NC State 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-23) Wednesday night, winning their ACC opener and 28th-straight home match and improving to an impressive 12-0 (1-0, ACC) season mark.
It wasn't the most impressive match statistically, as Carolina had 19 errors while hitting just .159, but the Tar Heels found a way to defeat their conference rival as Victoria McPherson posted nine kills and six blocks.
"We played a really good NC State team tonight that played really feisty with good defense and good blocking," head coach Joe Sagula said. "We lost our patience at times, but we found a way to finish well and play our game.
"We need to keep attacking the ball and play aggressive. There were times were we backed off and just waited for them to make a mistake, but the most important thing was that when it got to 20 points for us, we were able to finish strong," Sagula said.
UNC took the first frame 25-22 despite committing nine errors and hitting just .071 to NC State's .118. Leigh Andrew had four kills and a block to help the Tar Heels, while Kayla Berringer and Victoria McPherson each had three kills and a block.
Set two was close as well, but the Tar Heels won 25-23 behind three kills apiece from Andrew, McPherson, and Paige Neuenfeldt. UNC hit an improved .229 team attack with just three errors while the Wolfpack totaled eight that frame.
Down 23-19 in the third set, Carolina scored six straight points to take set three 25-23 and secure its ninth sweep of the season. McPherson notched three kills and four blocks in the final frame, and Jovana Bjelica added four kills to help lock up the Carolina victory.
