Freshman Schneider Shines At UVA Ranked +1
Release: 09/22/2013

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.  - The North Carolina men's tennis team wrapped up play at the UVA Ranked+1 Invitational at Snyder Tennis Center on Sunday, where freshman Ronnie Schneider claimed the singles crown in the White bracket.

Schneider, a native of Bloomington, Ind., navigated a field of highly ranked players before defeating Virginia Tech's 43rd-ranked Amerigo Contini 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the final on Sunday. Contini was named the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2013 after posting 28 wins.

Schneider's path to the final match included wins over Sam Williams of UNC-Wilmington, VCU's 55th-ranked Alexis Heugas and Virginia freshman J.C. Aragone.

"It was really good to go out in my first tournament and come out on top," said Schneider. "I always go to tournaments shooting to win, and to do it for the first time as a Tar Heel was a great experience.

"I got off to a good start and then in third set it was tight the whole way. It was a battle. He [Contini] is a great player and he's ranked pretty high nationally. Overall it was a good match. We both played well."

Sophomore Brett Clark picked up a win in the Blue singles flight over 70th-ranked Nikita Fomin of George Washington before falling to N.C. State's Nick Horton, 6-3, 7-5. Clark retired during the 5th place match on Sunday due to injury.

Senior James Coxe fell in the Unranked Draw to Louisville's Alex Gornet, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles action, which was played on Friday, the tandem of Schneider and Clark defeated Kentucky's Alejandro Gomez and Panav Jha 8-6 in the first round of the Green bracket. The young Tar Heel duo proceeded to edge Elon's pairing of Cameron Silverman and Stefan Fortmann 8-7 before falling to Virginia's Harrison Richmond and J.C. Aragone in the Green flight finals.

Carolina's other doubles pairing of Johan Skattum and James Coxe couldn't overcome a tough first round draw in the Black doubles flight. They took an 8-2 loss at the hands of Virginia's Justin Shane and Luca Cortineli.

Skattum missed the final two days of the tournament due to an injury.

The Tar Heels will be back in action when All-American Pre-Qualifying begins on September 27th in Tulsa, Okla.
