FRANLIN, TENN. - The North Carolina women's golf team is in 7th place after registering a team score of 7-over 295 in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship. Katherine Perry and Leslie Cloots led the Tar Heel roster today, each firing a 1-over 73.
"Overall, the team played well today," said head coach Jan Mann. "They had a great attitude on the course and could tell that were having fun. The course is demanding on approach shots and putts and we felt that they handled both of those nicely. The team ranked 2nd among birdies and have set themselves up for a great round tomorrow."
Katherine Perry, a senior from Cary, N.C., shot four birdies to end the round 1-over 73. Leslie Cloots, a freshman from Oelegam, Antwerp, also recorded a 1-over 73 after having three birdies on day one. Perry and Cloots are tied for 30th place at the end of day one. Sophomore Elizabeth Mallett is only one stroke behind to tie for 36th place after the first round. Mallet, from Sutton Coldfield, England, shot a 2-over 74. Senior Jackie Chang registered a 3-over 75 in round one. Chang, from Scottsdale, Ariz., will be starting round two tied for 42th place. The final Tar Heel team competitor is sophomore Samantha Marks. The Maitland, Fla. native, Marks shot a 5-over 77, and will end round one in a tie for 60th place. North Carolina also competed one individual player, junior Maia Schechter. Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., also registered a score of a 5-over 77 to close out day one for the Tar Heels.
Leading the field of 15 teams after the first round, Arizona State fired a 3-under-par 285 to end day one. UCLA and Vanderbilt followed with a tie for second place, each with a registered score of 1-over 289. In fourth and fifth place are Auburn and N.C. State, respectively. Auburn shot a 2-over 290, and N.C. State recorded a 3-over 291. Baylor ended day one in sixth place after a registered 4-over 292. North Carolina takes seventh to end the round 7-over-par 295.
Alabama's Stephanie Meadow and Baylor's Hayley Davis ended the day in a tie for first place after a recorded score of 4-under-par 68. Augusta James from N.C. State finished third with a score of 3-under 69. There was a three-way tie for fourth place. Kentucky's Liz Breed, Virginia's Elizabeth Brightwell, and Arizona State's Laura Blanco all shot a 2-under-par 70 in the first round.
The Mason Rudolph Championship, a three-day tournament to be played through Sunday, is a 54-hole event on the Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course. The course has a par-72, 6,337-yard layout. Live scoring is available at GoHeels.com.
