CARY — Jenny Levy, women’s lacrosse coach at Carolina, and women’s tennis coach Brian Kalbas will be among the featured speakers at the North Carolina Sports Summit here Friday.
The Sports Summit is organized by the Triangle Sports Commission and features well-known national and state leaders in the sports and sports tourism industry.
Levy and Kalbas both will appear on a panel with Mark Lewis, executive vice-president for championships and alliances at the NCAA. Their topic is “What Makes a Championship Special for Athletes and Coaches.”
Levy guided her team to an 18-3 record and the NCAA championship in women’s lacrosse last season. The Tar Heels won the title with a 13-12, triple-overtime win over Maryland. She was named National Coach of the Year and her star player, Kara Cannizzaro, was the Honda Award winner for lacrosse. Levy is the fourth-winningest active coach in the nation with 242 victories in 18 years at Carolina.
Kalbas is in his 11th season of running the Tar Heel program. He led the Tar Heels to the USA/ITA National Indoor Championship team title last season. Two of his players, Gina Suarez-Malaguti and Carolina Price, won All-America honors.
Among the other speakers during the day will be Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner John Swofford, the former UNC athletic director.
