CARY, N.C. - The North Carolina men's tennis team got its 2013-14 season underway Friday at the Duke Fab Four Invite at the Cary Tennis Center. Tar Heel players went 3-1 in doubles and 2-2 in singles on the opening day.
The doubles team of Oystein Steiro and Nelson Vick, seeded second, won both of its matches Friday in the Men's Doubles BLUE Flight. The UNC tandem beat Aaron Chaffee and Will Juggins of William & Mary 8-4 in the quarterfinals and Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Van Damrongsri of Lousiville in the semifinals 8-6. Steiro and Vick will play for the championship of the BLUE Flight Saturday at 9 a.m. against Romain Bogaerts and Anthony Delcore of Wake Forest. In the WHITE Doubles FLight, UNC's Stuart DePaolo and Johan Skattum lost in the first round to Wilder Pimentel and Michal Voscek of VCU 8-3 before defeating Joe Mills and Javier Waase of Radford in the consolation semifinal 8-5. DePaolo and Skattum play Jordan Kaufman and Brian Kowalksi of Elon at 9 a.m. Saturday in the consolation final.
Carolina split a total of four singles matches on the opening day. In the men's singles BLACK flight, Michal Voscek of VCU defeated Nelson Vick in the first round 6-4, 6-1 while UNC's Oystein Steiro defeated Sebastian Stiefelmeyer of Louisville 6-2, 6-4.
UNC freshman Johan Skattum won his first round match in the BLUE flight, downing Will Juggins of William and Mary 6-3, 6-0. Carolina's Stuart DePaolo fell in the WHITE flight's first round in three sets, losing to Sasha Gozun of South Florida 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
