TULSA, OKLA.- The North Carolina women's golf team placed 11th after shooting a 7-over-par 287 in the final round of play at the NCAA Dale McNamara Fall Preview. The Tar Heels finished with a 29-over 869 for the tournament. Sophomore Elizabeth Mallett led North Carolina in the final round with a 1-under 69. She was the only Tar Heel to fire an under par round in the tournament.
Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, was one of the four Tar Heels to birdie her first hole. Mallett had two additional birdies and two bogey in the round to finish the day with a 5-over 215 for the tournament and tied for 17th place. Sophomore Samantha Marks and senior Katherine Perry each fired a 2-over 72 in the final round. Marks, from Maitland, Fla., had two birdies on the day, but double-bogeyed her third hole and bogeyed two more holes in the final round. Cary, N.C., native Perry recorded one birdie and three bogeys. Marks finished with an 8-over 218 to tie for 28th, and Perry tied for 47th with a 11-over 221. Jackie Chang, a senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., shot a 4-over 74 to finish tied for 36th with a 9-over 219. Chang carded two birdies, two bogeys and two double-bogeys in the round. Freshman Leslie Cloots, from Wilrijk, Antwerp, Belgium, had three birdies and eight bogeys to finish the final round of play with a 5-over 75 and tied for 61st overall in the individual race with a 16-over 226.
Southern California fired a 4-under 276 to beat out second-day leader Duke, who shot a 7-over 287 to fall out of the lead. The Trojans finished the tournament with an 8-over 848. Oklahoma remained in second place, four strokes behind Southern California and shooting a 2-over 282 in the final day. Oklahoma State finished with a 15-over 855, and Alabama and Duke tied for fourth place a stroke behind with a 16-over 856 each.
Southern California's Kyung Kim won the individual race after firing a 4-under 66 in the final round. Kim was 6-under for the tournament with a 204 total. Noemi Jimenez of Arizona State, Stephanie Meadow of Alabama and Julie Yang of Oklahoma State tied for third place with a 4-under 206. Arkansas' Regina Plasencia rounded out the top five with a 2-under 208 for the tournament.
The NCAA Dale McNamara Fall Preview 54-hole event was played at the Tulsa Country Club which features a par 70, 6,168-yard layout. Tulsa Country Club is the site of the 2014 NCAA Championships. The North Carolina women's golf team returns to action Friday, Sept. 20, in the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn.
