Tar Heels Set To Open Home Slate With Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 18 Tar Heels are set to open their 2013 home slate this weekend when they host Albany, George Washington and James Madison for the 17th annual Carolina Classic tournament. 

Who: No. 18 UNC, Albany, George Washington and James Madison

What: The 17th annual Carolina Classic tournament, featuring six matches between the four teams

Where: Carmichael Arena. All matches are free admission.

When: Friday, Sept. 13, and Saturday, Sept. 14. See full tournament schedule below.

Friday, Sept. 13
James Madison vs. Albany - 4 p.m.
UNC vs. George Washington - 7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 14
Albany vs. George Washington - 10 a.m.
UNC vs. James Madison - Noon
George Washington vs. James Madison - 5:30 p.m.
UNC vs. Albany - 7:30 p.m.

UNC Volleyball Camp Reunion

UNC volleyball camp alumni are invited to attend each Carolina match this weekend. Campers can sign in prior to UNC's matches at the table in the Carmichael lobby to be entered to have a chance to participate in the halftime promotion.

Scouting the Teams

  • North Carolina: Ranked No. 18 in this week's AVCA Poll, the Tar Heels are undefeated at 6-0 with their best season start since 2002. UNC leads the ACC in kills (14.95/set) and assists (13.86/set). Jovana Bjelica leads the team with 62 kills and a .326 hitting percentage, while Leigh Andrew has 60 kills and 62 digs so far this season. 

  • Albany: UNC is 1-0 against the Great Danes, who are 0-6 to start the season. Olivia Schonewise leads Albany with 34 kills, 25 digs and five blocks, while Amanda Dolan has tallied 31 kills and 16 blocks.

  • George Washington: GW is 3-3 this season, and the Tar Heels are 3-2 all-time when facing the Colonials. Kelsey Newman has recorded 70 kills and 52 digs on the year, and Rachel Goss has put up 53 kills, 51 digs while combining with Newman for 10 aces and 10 blocks.

  • James Madison: The Dukes are 2-5 in 2013, and Carolina is 5-0 when facing JMU. Lizzy Briones has 84 kills while hitting .330 and has totaled 33 blocks, 28 digs and seven aces this season. Janey Goodman has added 85 kills and 22 blocks.
