Five Tar Heels will be on the U.S. roster as the team heads to Argentina later this month for the Pan American Cup, to be contested Sept. 19-29 in Mendoza. Named to the team, which was announced by USA Field Hockey on Friday, were Rachel Dawson, Katelyn Falgowski, Jackie Kintzer, Kelsey Kolojejchick and Caitlin Van Sickle.
Also making the trip to Argentina is UNC assistant coach Guy Cathro, who will serve as part of the U.S. coaching staff.
"I have been pleased with the progress of the group over the last few weeks," said U.S. National Team head coach Craig Parnham. "Everyone has worked extremely hard and it is always unfortunate that not every player can be selected. The strength of the squad ensures we have competition for tours."
The team has been training at Penn State and will depart for Argentina on Sept. 15.
The U.S. will play as part of Pool B along with Chile, Mexico and Uruguay. In Pool A are Argentina, Canada, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana. The U.S. opens play on Sept. 21 vs. Mexico. The winner of the tournament qualifies for the 2014 Women's World Cup. The U.S. finished second to Argentina in this event in 2009, 2004 and 2001.
