MEDELLIN, Colombia - Avana Story begins her sophomore year at Carolina with a silver medal in the hammer throw at the 2013 Pan American Athletics Championships. Story threw 57.40 meters in her third attempt to bring home the second-place finish.
This was Story's first international competition and her first medal as a Tar Heel. Her progressions were 55.89 meters, foul, her winning and collegiate-best 57.40 meters, 57.21 meters, 55.50 meters, and foul.
Story made the junior national team after placing second at the USA Junior National Championships in June.
Eighteen year-old Hassana Divó Liser of Cuba won the women's hammer throw with her toss of 60.94 meters.
The USA Junior National Team won the games bringing home 21 medals, including eight gold, nine silver, and four bronze. Cuba placed second with eight total medals, six gold and two silver.
