No. 10: Carolina 1, Stanford 0 (2OT) - Women's Soccer, Nov. 30, 2012

It should immediately tell you something about the quality of 2012-13 for Carolina that a two-overtime win over a national rival in the Women's College Cup comes in at No. 10.

This game wasn't the most dramatic of UNC's run to the NCAA title (that one is coming), and it wasn't for the biggest stakes (so is that one), but when the Tar Heels met No. 1 Stanford on a wet Friday night in San Diego, Calif., it certainly had the feel of a national championship game.

Carolina women's soccer is, of course, the gold standard in the sport and perhaps in all of college athletics. Entering 2012, UNC had won exactly two-thirds of the NCAA titles contested in women's soccer (20 of 30).

But since defeating Stanford in the 2009 title game, the Tar Heels had fallen on relatively hard times. They'd been elmininated in the NCAA round of 16 in both 2010 and 2011, marking the first time in program history that Carolina had failed to reach the quarters in consecutive seasons. They had been knocked out of the ACC tournament in the quarterfinals in each of the last two years, including a 1-0 home loss to Virginia in 2012.

Stanford, on the other hand, came into the season in the midst of its best run of form in program history. The Cardinal had played for the last three national titles, finally winning its first NCAA crown with a win over Duke in 2011. The defending national champions arrived in San Diego with a record of 21-1-1 and were a perfect 19-0-0 since tying Boston College in August.

While Carolina's difficult run to the College Cup required a visit to Provo, Utah, Stanford -- like UNC so many times before -- was looking to win a national title without leaving its home state of California. The Pac-12 champions had outscored Idaho State, Santa Clara, Denver and UCLA 10-2 at the friendly confines of Laird Q. Cagan Stadium before arriving at USD's Torero Stadium.

For 90 minutes, the two giants of the sport fought to a stalemate in the rainy southern California conditions. Through regulation Carolina had a slight 14-13 edge in shots and had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.  Stanford's Emily Oliver registered seven saves in regulation and UNC's Adelaide Gay had four before the game went to sudden-death overtime.

The Tar Heels dominated the extra periods, outshooting Stanford 6-0, but Oliver kept the Cardinal alive with three crucial saves, including an incredible reaction stop of an Amber Brooks shot in the 94th minute.

But Carolina finally broke through in the 105th minute, as Kealia Ohai side-footed a low shot off the left post and in after a lovely build-up from Katie Bowen and Crystal Dunn. Ohai's golden goal was her team-best eighth of the season and gave the Tar Heels a spot in the NCAA title game for the 24th time in school history.
