GREENSBORO, N.C. - Tar Heel golfer Michael McGowan was the runner-up at the 89th Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T. The senior from Southern Pines, N.C., carded rounds of 69-68-69 for a 7-under-par 206 total and knotted the best finish by an amateur.
After fighting weather delays for two days and only playing 18 holes, the players had a full day of sun on Thursday and were able to play two rounds. Davis Bateman from Charlotte, N.C., who will join the Tar Heel team this coming fall, tied for 13th place at even par 213 with rounds of 71-72-70. Carolina head coach Andrew Sapp tied for 21st at 2-over 215 after shooting rounds of 71-69-75. McGowan, Bateman and Sapp knotted three of the top-four amateur finishes as McGowan was the top amateur, Bateman-second and Sapp-fourth.
Ray Franz, a PGA Apprentice Assistant Professional at Daniel Island Club in Charleston, S.C., captured the championship with a 12-under-par 201 total after firing rounds of 72-63-66. The 54-hole event was played at the par 71 Bryan Park Champions Course.
