Carolina Menís Tennis Team Adds Skattum
Release: 05/09/2013

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina has signed Johan Skattum to a National Letter of Intent for the 2013-14 school year.  He becomes the fourth Tar Heel to sign a letter of intent this year and will join Brayden Schnur of Montreal, Quebec, Ronnie Schneider of Bloomington, Ind., and Jack Murray of Beverly Hills, Mich., in next year's freshman class.

Skattum is a native of Oslo, Norway, and will be an outstanding addition to the team.

Over the past several years Johan has established himself as one of the best junior tennis players in the world.  In the boys 14 and under, Skattum was ranked number one in Europe and was a three-time national champion in Norway.  In 2010, he advanced to the semifinals of the under 16 European Championships.  He combined for three National Championships in the under 18 division in Norway (one indoor championship and two outdoor).

Skattum has enjoyed success at the international level as well, reaching three finals and two semifinals at ITF events.  Along the way he managed victories against several top 50 ITF players.  Additionally, Skattum has recently been named a member of the Norwegian Davis Cup team.

" I decided to go to UNC because it offers the best of both worlds when it comes to tennis and academics. I knew right away when I visited that UNC was the right place for me," Skattum said.  "The way Coach Sam Paul, Coach TrippPhillips, and the team received me, made me feel welcome right away. And after spending time with everyone I knew that this is the right environment to help me reach my full potential as a player and a student. l am really excited about coming to UNC and looking forward to joining the team."

"We are so happy to have Johan joining our team," said Coach Paul.  "He fits in amazingly well with our team and the overall environment here at UNC.  He is a great tennis player and an outstanding student.  Johan brings an incredibly positive attitude and a tremendous work ethic to the team, and we know he will be a huge asset to our program."
