PHILADELPHIA - The University of North Carolina women's track and field team opened the program's slate of competition at the 2013 Penn Relays on Thursday afternoon with top finishes in five championship level events.
Cameron Overstreet placed second in the championship flight of the pole vault, clearing 13-1 ½ (4.00 meters). Overstreet is currently tied for 10th in the NCAA East Preliminary qualifying rankings with her All-ACC performance height of 13-5 ¼ (4.10 meters).
Chrishawn Williams took third in the championship round of the long jump followed by Jacinda Evans in fifth. Williams leapt 20-1 ¾ (6.14 meters) and Evans leapt 19-8 ¾ (6.01 meters). Evans currently ranks No. 1 in the East preliminary after she jumped a new personal best 21-1 ¼ (6.43 meters) at the ACC Outdoor Championships last weekend. Williams is sixth in the qualifying rankings at 20-8 ½ (6.31 meters).
Sarah Howard placed sixth in the championship shot put as she threw 51-4 ½ (15.66 meters). Howard is currently 11th in the preliminary rankings for the shot put with her PR throw of 53-0 ¾ (16.17 meters) she set at the Florida Relays.
The women's distance medley relay of Annie LeHardy, Cori Floyd, Elizabeth Whelan, and Lianne Farber placed fifth in the Championship of America race. The relay's time of 11:12.92 ranks fourth all-time in the UNC record books.The Tar Heels will continue competition at the Penn Relays on Friday with student-athletes competing in the women's horizontal and vertical jumps, men's throws, men's 110-meter hurdles, and the men's 4x400 relay.
