CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The UNC volleyball squad closed out spring play with a home tournament this past Saturday, April 20, at Carmichael Arena.
The Tar Heels hosted Charlotte, Duke, NC State, and William & Mary for a 10-match tournament, in which they finished 2-1-1.
- Split with NC State: 30-32, 25-14
- Defeated Charlotte: 25-11, 25-15
- Defeated William & Mary: 25-23, 25-18
- Lost to Duke: 23-25, 22-25
"This was the last competitive play for the spring season, and I thought we showed some good improvement in areas of our game, but we still have some ways to grow as a team," head coach Joe Sagula
said. "I thought Jordyn Schnabl
had a great day and a good week of practice leading up to our home event. Her release was smooth, and she made some good decisions and looked like the leader of our offense. Heather Gearhart
did a nice job filling in as the libero for our veteran Ece Taner
, who was not able to play this weekend. Playing in the 6-2 offense at times allowed Kayla Berringer
and Hayley McCorkle
to get extra experience as right side attackers as well."
"Our middle hitters once again were impressive early in the day, and each of our outside hitters had good runs at times. What we are still searching for is consistency on the court in our passing, and the leadership to make plays down the stretch in close games. This will develop in time as this team gains more and more experience."
"I feel that we are playing at a high level at times, and with great athleticism, but we need to continue to mature as a team in order to compete for a championship level next fall. I like the progress we have made. We are strong and getting better each day we play, and I look forward to the challenges for the 2013 season," Sagula said.
