CHAPEL HILL --- No. 1 North Carolina will begin the final week of the regular season Wednesday when the Tar Heels host No. 11 Duke at 3 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. In addition to being the final regular season home match of 2013, Wednesday will be Senior Day for Zoe De Bruycker, Lauren McHale and Gina Suarez-Malaguti. The trio, which has guided Carolina through perhaps the most successful four years in program history, will be honored prior to the start of the match.
Carolina is 21-2 and 7-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference following a pair of 5-2 wins at No. 10 Miami and No. 30 Florida State last weekend. The Tar Heels hold sole possession of first place in the league standings with three matches to play and can clinch the regular season title with wins over Duke, Boston College and Maryland.
The Tar Heels continue to sport one of the nation's deepest singles lineups, a talented group led by No. 9 Suarez-Malaguti. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., senior has won ACC Player of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks after going a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles over the last two weekends. She is joined in the ITA singles poll by No. 33 Whitney Kay, No. 40 De Bruycker and No. 52 Caroline Price.
The 11th-ranked Blue Devils, who have been beset by injuries in 2013, enter Wednesday match with a record of 14-6 and 5-3 in league play. No. 25 Hanna Mar leads a quartet of Duke players ranked in the singles poll. Duke split the Florida weekend, defeating FSU, 4-3, before falling to Miami, 4-0.
Carolina defeated Duke, 4-0, earlier this season in the semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Tar Heels would go on to win the title and ascend to the No. 1 ranking, where they have stayed for the last 10 weeks.
Wednesday's match will feature free hot dogs for spectators and, as always, admission is free. Fans can also follow the live scoring on GoHeels.com.
