Release: 04/13/2013

RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 24 North Carolina split a doubleheader with ACC rival NC State Saturday, claiming a close 2-1 win in game one before dropping game two, 11-8 in extra innings.

The Tar Heels drop to 33-14 overall and 10-4 in ACC play.

GAME ONE

After four scoreless innings, the Tar Heels made a move in the top of the fifth when Kristen Brown homered to left center to put Carolina on the board.

NC State answered in the bottom half, as Lana Van Dyken drew a walk and then scored on a double down the left field line by Kirsty Grant.

The teams stayed even at 1-1 through the sixth, but the Tar Heels struck again in the top of the seventh. Constance Orr reached base on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brown then reached on an NC State fielding error, which scored Orr for the winning run.

Lori Spingola fanned eight while giving up only two hits and four walks in seven innings of work.

GAME TWO

After a pitching duel with only five total hits in game one, each team tallied 12 hits apiece in game two, which went to the Wolfpack in eight innings.

Brown led off the game with a single to center, and then advanced to second on a bunt single by Aquilla Mateen. Haleigh Dickey reached on a fielder's choice, which took out Mateen but advanced Brown to third. Amber Parrish doubled to right center to move Dickey to third and bring in Brown for the first run. Orr then doubled to left to score Dickey and Parrish to make it 3-0, UNC.

NCSU evened the score in the bottom half, as Caitlin Dent got things started with a homerun to center. Chelsea Tate and Bethaney Wells were each hit by a pitch. A double to center by Hanna Sommer drove in Tate and advanced Wells to third, who then scored on a wild pitch.

In the third, Parrish singled to center and then Jenna Kelly homered to center field to put the Tar Heels up 5-3.

The Wolfpack answered again in the bottom frame in similar fashion, as Wells hit an infield single before Sommer homered to left center to even the board once again at 5-5.

Matten singled to center in the fifth, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Haleigh Dickey before scoring on an infield single by Parrish.

UNC held NC State in the fifth, but the Wolfpack did some damage in the sixth. Sara Lippard doubled to left, followed by a single to right by Leah Jones, which advanced pinch runner Katie Mansilla to third. Mansilla scored on a sacrifice fly by Van Dyken, which also advanced Jones' pinch runner Hayley Stowe to second. Grant doubled to bring home Stowe before the Tar Heels made a pitching change, bringing Ashley Bone in for Spingola. Renada Davis singled and advanced to second on the throw, which moved Grant to third before she scored on a groundout by Dent.

Down two, the Tar Heels evened the score in the seventh when Dickey hit a clutch homerun, which drove in Mateen, who had singled to lead off the inning. The Tar Heels fielded three straight outs in the bottom of the seventh to force an extra inning.

A groundout, fly out and strike out couldn't produce any runs for Carolina in the top of the eighth, but NC State broke through in the bottom of the inning. With two outs on the board, Grant doubled to right and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Davis drew a walk to put a second runner on before Dent hit a walk-off homer to left as NCSU claimed the 11-8 win.

Bone took the loss, pitching the final 2.1 innings while giving up three hits, with one strikeout and one walk. Spingola pitched the first 5.1 innings, giving up nine hits and striking out four.
