Release: 04/12/2013

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 69 North Carolina (9-11, 2-5 ACC) defeated No. 53 Miami (13-9, 2-5 ACC) 5-2 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Friday in men's tennis action. The Tar Heels took the doubles point before running off three singles matches in a row to earn their second ACC victory.

The Tar Heels won the doubles point for a third consecutive match behind a dramatic rally at the No. 2 seed.

The pairing of #81 William Parker and Nelson Vick picked up Carolina's first doubles victory, cruising past Omar Aly and Wilfredo Gonzalez by a count of 8-1 at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, the duo of Brett Clark and Esben Hess-Olesen trailed 3-6, but managed to win five consecutive games to capture a thrilling 8-6 victory and the doubles point for the Heels.

The match at No. 3 doubles was consequently halted, leaving the score 7-6 with Carolina's James Coxe and Oystein Steiro leading.

Carolina's momentum carried over to singles, where the Tar Heels took four of the six matches.

Oystein Steiro tallied Carolina's first singles victory at the No. 5 spot, dismissing Marco Stancati 6-1, 6-4. At No. 3 singles, Nelson Vick blanked Miami's Wilfredo Gonzalez in the first set before taking the match by a score of 6-0, 6-3.

Senior William Parker clinched the match for the Tar Heels at No. 4 singles, defeating Omar Aly in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

In the remaining matches, Miami picked up victories at the No. 2 and 6 spots, and Carolina's #31 Esben Hess-Olesen gritted out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 seed.

"We are playing better in doubles, so I'm proud of that," said head coach Sam Paul, "We've been outdoors a little bit now so we are getting used to that. That was definitely the best match we have played outdoors all season."

The Tar Heels will take to the courts again on Sunday when they face No. 27 Florida State. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
