CORAL GABLES, Fla. --- No. 1 North Carolina faces another tough Atlantic Coast Conference test this weekend when the Tar Heels face No. 10 Miami on Friday afternoon at 5 and No. 30 Florida State on Sunday at noon. Friday's match will pit two of the three league teams with just one loss against one another and will give the winner a leg up in the race for the regular season crown.
Carolina (19-2, 5-1 ACC) is coming off a sweep of No. 27 Georgia Tech and No. 16 Clemson last weekend in Chapel Hill. After a 4-0 shutout win over the Yellow Jackets, the Tar Heels gutted out a 4-3 victory over the Tigers. The wins kept UNC at No. 1 in the latest ITA national poll for a ninth consecutive week. Senior Gina Suarez-Malaguti, who went 3-0 on the week in singles and doubles, moved up to No. 7 in the ITA singles poll and was named ACC Player of the Week for her efforts.
In addition to Suarez-Malaguti, four other Tar Heels are ranked in the singles top 125. Freshman Whitney Kay is No. 34 this week and is 14-2 and 5-1 in ACC duals. Sophomore Caroline Price is now a perfect 18-0 in duals and is No. 42 in the poll. Senior Zoe De Bruycker is No. 48 in the country and freshman Ashley Dai is No. 119. Dai is also ranked No. 28 in doubles with Kay and No. 52 with Price.
Miami (15-3, 6-1 ACC) has won nine straight dual matches and swept Boston College and Maryland last weekend. The Hurricanes' lone conference setback came to their in-state foes from Tallahassee. FSU (12-5, 4-3 ACC) has won four of five but the Seminoles fell to Boston College, 4-2, last Friday.
