CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The Tar Heels closed out their 10-game home stand with a 6-0 victory over Elon Wednesday, led by Lori Spingola's 11 strikeouts, her sixth game this season with double digit strikeouts.
In the opening inning, Elisha Elliott drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single by Haleigh Dickey. A three-run shot to left center by Constance Orr drove in Elliott and Dickey, putting the Tar Heels on the board early.
In the bottom of the third, Dickey reached on an error and Tisha Mahon came in to pinch run, scoring on a home run to left by Amber Parrish. Kristen Brown then doubled to left and came home on a double to center field by Nece, increasing Carolina's lead to 6-0.
Elon threatened in the fifth after Grace Eng doubled to center and advanced to third on a groundout by Ali Ford, but Spingola's eighth strikeout closed out the frame before the Phoenix could score.
The Phoenix put runners on second and third to threaten again in the sixth, as Carleigh Nester singled to left center and advanced to third on a double down the left field line by Tomeka Watson.
UNC heads to Raleigh to face NC State for a three-game ACC series this weekend. Both games on Saturday at 1 and 3 pm will be shown live on ESPN3, and Sunday's game at 1pm will be streamed live on the ACC Digital Network.
