Tar Heels In Action At Occoquan Sprints
Release: 04/07/2013

The second varsity eight and novice eight provided the highlights as the North Carolina rowing team raced at the Occoquan Sprints Sunday in Occoquan, Va. Competing on the Occoquan Reservoir, the Tar Heel second varsity eight rebounded from a fourth-place heats finish to win the petite final. The novice eight, facing stiff competition for the first time this season, took second in the "A" final.

Overall, the day of racing proved to be a great learning experience for the Tar Heels. "For the varsity eight and the second varsity eight, our goal was just to go out and race our race," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We did OK in the heats, but not great, so we really emphasized that goal for the finals.

"In the finals, both boats had close races all the way down the course, stuck to their race plan and had a great second race. We felt much better about how we finished the day than about how we started."

The Varsity eight took fourth in its heat then third in the petite final. Racing in that boat were Allie Davis (coxswain), Kathryn McCormick, Sarah Priest, Alex McClelland, Jasmine Dennis, Lucie Kloak, Morgan Koder, Emily Leidolf and Maria Santoyo.

The second varsity eight was fourth in its heat then came back to win the petite final with a lineup of Carie Mastrianni (coxswain), Katie Burger, Katherine Summerton, Amanda Truesdell, Lindsay Newman, Chelsea Gustafson, SB Ritch, Claire Wardius and Julie Peterson.

The varsity four raced in seeded heats, finishing fourth with a lineup of Elizabeth Ayers (coxswain), Sarah Giles, Ali Margherio, Amanda Stewart and Steph Henrich.

The novice eight won its heat to earn a spot in the A final. The Tar Heels were second in that race with a lineup of Kylee Wooten (coxswain), Lauren Colberg, Addie Schoenberger, Victoria McGee, Jessica Cooper, Bridget Taylor, Ashley Long, Elise Widman and Emmy Johnson.

The second novice eight raced once, finishing second in its heat. The lineup for the 2N8 was Jessie Lamoreaux (coxswain), Emory Byrd, Liz Marshall, Simone Biggers, Tatianna Blount, Danielle Joe, Chelsea Townsend, Mariah Akinbi and Reghan Horman.

Next up for the Tar Heels is the Knecht Cup April 13-14 on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
