Heels Play Strong In Spring Tournaments
Release: 04/01/2013

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Carolina volleyball squad has played in two tournaments so far this spring, and the Tar Heels' success so far is proof of the strong team they'll return to the court for the fall 2013 season.

Check out what UNC has been up to so far this spring below:

Duke Tournament Results (March 23)

  • Won two sets vs. Liberty: 25-23, 25-22
  • Split sets vs. Duke: 29-31, 25-23
  • Won two sets vs. High Point: 25-18, 25-19
  • Lost two sets vs. Wake Forest 18-25, 21-25

Coach Sagula's Thoughts: "Overall this was the first time the team competed this spring, and we played eight different lineups through the day. Our goal was to provide an equal opportunity for most of the players to gain game experience and learn to compete. Our freshman setter, Jordyn Schnabl, was able to run the offense most of the day in a 5-1 system and was helped at times by senior Kaitlyn Anderson as we would play a 6-2 as well.

We have four different liberos playing in addition to our returning starter Ece Taner. In addition to veteran players senior Kayla Berringer, Anderson, and Taner, all of our freshmen were able to play and some for the first time in a Carolina uniform. Two red-shirt players Hayley McCorkle and Taylor Treacy got their first game action as the Tar Heels and showed some great poise and athleticism on the court."

University of Pennsylvania (March 30)

Coach Sagula's Thoughts: "This past weekend the team traveled to Philadelphia to play Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania. It was a training and competition day for all three teams and an opportunity to scrimmage and try many different lineups against two very successful programs.
It was challenging because the level of play was high, and it was very consistent from the beginning of the day through the final 6 v 6 games played.

The team competed well overall. Ece Taner stood out in particular with her great passing and defensive play, Jordyn Schnabl is making good progress as the team's setter, while Kaitlyn Anderson did a great job filling in as an additional setter through the day. Chaniel Nelson had a very good day and is stepping up to be the team's go-to player.

The team's defense is making significant improvements both at the net with more consistent blocking, as well as their floor defense. And the passing game is showing some progress as well and will be the real test for the Heels making an impact this spring.
