AWENDAW, S.C. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team stands in fifth place with a 23-over-par 599 total during the second round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate being played at Bulls Bay Golf Club. Second-round play was suspended due to darkness and will resume Tuesday morning followed by the final round. The first round was scheduled for yesterday, but was rained out which necessitated two rounds being played on Monday.
Nine of the 15 teams completed their second rounds, including the Tar Heels, fighting cold and very windy conditions. Carolina fired rounds of 302-297 for its 599 total. The Tar Heels were led by junior Andy Sajevic who stands at 2-over 146 and senior Michael McGowan who is one stroke back at 147.
Sajevic fired a 1-under-par 71 Monday morning in a round where he scored four birdies and three bogeys. The Fremont, Neb., native shot a 3-over 75 in the afternoon for a 2-over 146 and stands alone in fifth place. McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., is just one stroke back tied for sixth place at 3-over 147. He fired rounds of 74-73 and his 1-over 73 included three birdies, two bogeys and one double-bogey. Freshman Keagan Cummings, from Dublin, Ireland, is tied for 31st place at 8-over 152 with rounds of 77-75. Bailey Patrick, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., rebounded with a 2-over 74 in the afternoon after shooting 80 in the first round and is tied for 42nd at 10-over 154. Sophomore Brandon Dalinka, from Newtown, Pa., carded rounds of 82-76 for a 14-over 158 and is currently tied for 58th place.
LSU holds the lead as the Tigers fired a 3-under 285 in the afternoon after shooting a 304 Monday morning for a 13-over 589 total. Duke is one stroke back in second place at 14-over 590 after rounds of 302-288. Missouri, which has not completed its second round, is in third place at 16-over after shooting a 303 in the morning and is currently 1-over in the second round. NC State is in fourth place at 18-over 594 while Carolina is in fifth place at 23-over 599, Texas A&M is sixth at 24-over 600 and Wake Forest, which has yet to complete its second round, is 25-over in seventh place.
Albin Choi of NC State and Mads Soegaard of Duke tied for the individual lead at 2-under-par 142. Choi fired rounds of 72-70 while Soegaard carded rounds of 73-69. Andrew Presley of LSU is in third place at 1-under 143 while Mitch Sutton of NC State is fourth at even-par 144 and Carolina's Sajevic is fifth at 2-over 146. There is a seven-way tied for sixth place at 3-over 147 including Carolina's McGowan.
The second round of the 54-hole event will resume at 7:30 Tuesday morning followed by the final round which will begin with a shotgun start at approximately 9:30-10:00 at Bulls Bay Golf Club which features a par 72, 7,363-yard layout. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com.
