Three North Carolina men's fencers finished competition at the NCAA Championships in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday, and sophomore Gillian Lityinski, UNC's sole qualifier in the women's bracket, started her quest for a sabre title.
The men's competition ran on Thursday and Friday, with the women's set for Saturday and Sunday. Litynski, a sophomore from Niskayuna, N.Y., finished 18th in women's sabre in 2012.
In the men's bracket, Joseph Alter finished 19th in foil. Sam Austin was 20th in men's sabre and Jackson Bryant-Comstock 23rd.
It was the first NCAA Championships appearance for Austin, a junior from Dix Hills, N.Y., and Bryant-Comstock, a senior from Durham. Alter, a senior from Charlotte, made his second appearance - he took 23rd in men's foil in 2011.
In the team standings, UNC currently sits 12th.
