All Five Tar Heels Advance At NCAAs
Release: 03/21/2013

North Carolina had a successful first day at the NCAA Championships on Thursday as all five Tar Heels in competition advanced to Friday's action in Des Moines, Iowa.

The duo of Nathan Kraisser and Evan Henderson lived up to their seeding as both Tar Heels went 2-0 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinal round.

Freshman Joey Ward and sophomore Alex Utley each won their first round match but suffered defeats in the second round and will begin wrestleback action on Friday.

Redshirt freshman John Staudenmayer fell to Penn State's David Taylor in the first round before advancing in the wrestleback bracket in the evening session.

The Tar Heels tallied 11.5 points as a team and are currently in a tie for 12th place after Thursday's competition. Carolina's 11.5 points are the highest among ACC teams at the 2013 NCAA Championships.

The 11.5 team points are the most scored by a Tar Heel squad since the 2005 team finished in 24th place with 23 team points. The 2005 season also saw Carolina's last All-America when Evan Sola finished in sixth place.

Friday's first session begins at 10 a.m. CT at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. ESPNU will be televising the action throughout the day.

125 - Nathan Kraisser
Freshman Nathan Kraisser opened his first NCAA Championships with a third period pin of David Terao of American. Kraisser was able to get the pin after 6:27 minutes of action to advance to the second round.

The seventh-seeded Kraisser then faced Hofstra's Steve Bonanno who knocked off No. 10 seed Josh Martinez of Air Force in the first round. Kraisser punched his ticket to Friday morning's quartefinal round with a 5-3 decision win over Bonanno.

Kraisser will face the No. 2 seed Jesse Delgado of Illinois in the quarterfinals.

133 - Joey Ward
Freshman Joey Ward battled to a 7-5 decision win over Daryl Thomas of Illinois in the first round before facing the No. 2 seed Tony Ramos of Iowa. Ramos was able to claim a pin of Ward in 1:07 to drop the Tar Heel to the wrestleback bracket.

Ward will take on Hofstra's Jamie Franco to open competition Friday after Franco claimed a sudden victory over Duke's Brandon Gambucci.

141 - Evan Henderson
Sophomore Evan Henderson advanced to the quarterfinal round on Thursday with a pair of victories in his second NCAA Championships. Henderson rolled into the quarterfinals behind a pin of Pasquale Greco of Northwestern in 5:27 to open the day before posting a major decision against the No. 12 seed Chris Mecate.

Henderson posted a 10-2 win over Mecate out of Old Dominion to punch his ticket for the quarterfinal round set for Friday's morning session.

The fifth-seeded Henderson will face a familiar foe in Edinboro's Mitchell Port, the four seed. The pair squared off twice during the regular season, both times at the Midlands Championships where Port claimed a pair of decision wins.

165 - John Staudenmayer
Redshirt freshman John Staudenmayer faced a tough draw entering his first NCAA Championships as he drew No. 2 seed David Taylor of Penn State. Taylor was able to pin Staudenmayer with eight seconds remaining in the first period to drop Staudenmayer into the wrestleback bracket.

Staudenmayer rebounded with a win over Nicholas Visicaro of Rutgers in the wrestleback bracket. Staudenmayer posted a 6-2 decision over Visicaro and will face Indiana's Ryan LeBlanc when action resumes on Friday.

184 - Alex Utley
Sophomore Alex Utley was locked into an epic battle with Indiana's Lucas Sheridan in the opening round before Utley was able to get an escape in the first tiebreaker to earn a 2-1 decision to open his first NCAA Championships.

Utley then faced No. 2 seed Ben Bennett of Central Michigan in the second round as Bennett dropped Utley to the wrestleback bracket after a 10-0 major decision.

Utley will face Fred Garcia of Lock Haven when the Tar Heel sophomore takes to the mat on Friday.
