Carolina Takes Two Over BC Saturday

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina opened ACC play Saturday with two wins over Boston College, improving to 17-6 (2-0) on the season.

UNC shut out the Eagles in game one, 5-0, and then took game two 10-4. Amy Nece had three hits and an RBI, and Lori Spingola struck out 12 in seven innings to help lead the Tar Heels in game one. Carolina had four homerns between the two games, including two by Haleigh Dickey, a grand slam from Tracy Chandless, and Constance Orr's seventh homer of the season. 

GAME ONE

After Amber Parrish drew a walk, Aquilla Mateen came in to pinch run and advanced to second on a groundout by Kristen Brown. Amy Nece then singled up the middle, scoring Mateen to put the Tar Heels up 1-0.

Erin Satterfield led off the third with a walk. Haleigh Dickey then homered to center, bringing in two runs for the Tar Heels.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Constance Orr hit her seventh homerun of the season out over left field, making it 4-0. The Tar Heels tacked on one more run in the sixth when Elisha Elliott drew a walk, stole second, and then scored on a double to left center by Satterfield.

Lori Spingola (10-4) pitched seven innings, tallying double-digit strikeouts for the third time this year as she fanned 12 while giving up just two hits and three walks.

GAME TWO

The Eagles struck first in game two, as Megan Cooley led off with a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Maria Pandolfo. Andrea Filler then drew a walk before Tory Speer singled to left to bring home Cooley.

Carolina answered in the second as Satterfiedl singled to short and then advanced to third on a single to right by Dickey before scoring on a single to left by Orr.

Satterfield hit another single to left center in the fifth, and Dickey reached base on a fielder's choice. Orr then singled to right to load the bases for Tracy Chandless, who belted out a grand slam over center field for her first homer of the season and to put Carolina up 5-1.

In the fourth, Jessie Daulton drew a walk before Cooley singled down the left field line. Pandolfo walked to load the bases for Andrea Filler, who singled to right as Daulton and Cooley came home. Boston College loaded the bases again when Speer drew a walk, but Ashley Bone finished the inning with a strikeout to prevent any more runs.

Dickey hit her second homer of the day in the fifth, hitting a solo shot over center to increase the Tar Heels' lead to three.

In the sixth, Nece reached first after being hit by a pitch and advanced to third after a double by Kelly to right field. A single by Morrison brought in Nece and advanced Kelly to third, who then scored on a single by Kati Causey. Orr doubled to left to bring in another run for the Tar Heels.

In the final frame, BC's Alana DiMaso reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second and then advanced to third on a groundout by Ayers. Annie Sommers then doubled to right center to drive in the Eagles' final run.

Ashley Bone earned the win, pitching 3.1 innings while striking out six, walking two and giving up just two hits. Sara Buchholz started the first 3.2 innings for Carolina, giving up three hits and walking six while fanning seven.

Carolina faces Boston College for game three of the series Sunday at noon at Anderson Stadium. Admission is free for all UNC home softball games.
