UNC Ends Carolina Classic With Two Wins
Release: 02/24/2013

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina finished out the 2013 Carolina Classic with two wins on Sunday, topping Iona 6-2 and then finishing with a 10-2 victory over Penn State.

The Tar Heels finished the tournament 3-0 as they improved to 10-5 on the season.

"Overall, I was really pleased with our performance this weekend," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "I thought we did a really good job of putting three wins together, and I thought we had some outstanding individual performances. Constance Orr, Amber Parrish and Tracy Chandless had some key hits, Lori Spingola was solid on the mound , and Aquilla Mateen also had some great base running for us. I'm pleased with how we're progressing and getting to where we want to be."

After back to back singles by Haleigh Dickey and Kristen Brown in the first, Constance Orr singled up the middle to drive in Dickey. A double by Tracy Chandless to right center brought in Brown and Orr, giving UNC the early 3-0 lead.

A homerun by Iona's Eileen McCann in the top of the third put the Gaels on the board, but Carolina responded with two runs in the bottom of the third when Orr homered to center field, bringing in Brown for a 5-1 lead going into the fourth.

The Tar Heels added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth off a solo shot to center by Paige Williams.

Carolina escaped bases loaded in the top of the fifth, but the Gaels loaded the bases again in the sixth and scored after Allison Hand drew a walk.

Ashley Bone recorded two strikeouts while giving up five hits in two innings for the win. Sara Bucchholz struckout three and gave up two hits in three innings, while Lauren Fuller recorded one strikeout and one hit in one inning. Constance Orr gave up no hits in one inning.

The Tar Heels had a big third inning in game two, started off with a walk by Jenna Kelly. Aquilla Mateen stole second and then third while pinch running for Kelly, and then scored on a single by Mahon. Mahon also stole second and then third before four straight walks scored another two runs. Stephanie Krider scored on a passed ball while pinch running for Haleigh Dickey, and then Constance Orr scored on a groundout to make it 5-0.

In the fourth, Penn State's Cassidy Bell singled to center and then scored on a double to center by Karlie Habitz.

Carolina had another strong inning in the fifth, led off by a double to right center by Orr. Amber Parrish singled to left, advancing Orr to third. Kristen Brown reached base and advanced to second while Orr scored on a single to left by Tracy Chandless. Amy Nece, pinch running for Chandless, advanced to second and Brown moved to third on a ground out before both scored on a single by Megan Morrison.

In the top of the sixth, Kailyn Johnson hit a solo homerun to right field for the Nittany Lion's second run.

Erin Satterfield homered to center field to lead off the sixth inning. Parrish singled down the left field line and advanced to third on hits by Brown and Nece before stealing home on a passed ball to end the game with a 10-2 score.

Lori Spingola pitched all six innings for Carolina, striking out six while giving up six hits and one walk.
