Carolina Routs Radford In Home Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 23 North Carolina topped Radford in the Tar Heels' doubleheader home opener Wednesday. UNC improves to 5-2 on the season as Carolina won 7-1 in game one and fought back from a 3-1 score to take game two, 7-3.

Junior Amy Nece finished with five hits and two RBIs, while freshman Kristen Brown and senior Constance Orr each homered to combine for five RBIs. Junior Lori Spingola tallied 12 strikeouts and gave up just one hit in six innings in game one, while junior Sara Buchholz pitched two and one-third innings in relief to earn the win in game two with three strikeouts and allowing two hits. 


In the third, with runners on first and second after back-to-back singles from Nece and freshman Erin Satterfied, Nece scored on a wild pitch to put the Tar Heels on the board. 

Freshman Kristen Brown homered in the fourth, driving in freshman Aquilla Mateen, who drew a walk ahead of Brown.

Sophomore Kati Causey and sophomore Lauren Walker each singled in the fifth before Mateen reached base on a fielder's choice, loading the bases for Brown. The freshman singled to knock in senior Elisha Elliott, who was running for Causey, making it 5-0, Carolina.

After Spingola notched three strikeouts in the top of the sixth, Nece led off for the Tar Heels with a single.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Erin Satterfield and then to third on a fly out before scoring on a single by sophomore Amber Parrish. Orr then hit the second long ball of the game to drive in Parrish for Carolina's final two runs.

In the final frame, the Highlander's Megan Honaker, running for Jessie Hutchens who had doubled to right, scored on a single by Becky Mantel to end the shutout for the final 7-1 score.


Radford struck first in game two when Emily Naegele homered in the second inning. The Tar Heels responded in the bottom half to even the score. Mateen, running for Orr who was hit by a pitch, stole second and third before coming home on a single by Brown.

The Highlanders scored two in the fourth to take the 3-1 lead. Hutchens singled to center and advanced to third on a double to left-center by Mantel. Ryndee Ruch singled to drive in two runs to put Radford on top.

Carolina bounced back in the fifth with a huge offensive inning. Satterfield doubled to left field before advancing to third on a fly out and then scoring on a single by Orr. Redshirt freshman Jenna Kelly singled to left-center, and then Orr and Kelly advanced on a single by Causey. Parrish singled to drive in Orr, and then Kelly scored on a single by senior Paige Williams.

With the bases loaded, junior Jordan Scarboro drew a walk to make it 6-3 before Nece notched another single to drive in two more runs and seal the Tar Heels' 7-3 victory.


North Carolina heads to College Station, Texas, this weekend for the Aggie Classic. The Tar Heels will face host Texas A&M, Pittsburgh and Stephen F.
