Crawford Takes Third At F&M Open
Release: 01/05/2013

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Freshman 157-pounder Jake Crawford claimed third place at the Franklin & Marshall Open on Saturday in Lancaster, Pa. Fellow freshman Cody Klempay was also in action for UNC.

The pair of Tar Heels took to the mat for the second straight week after missing the entire fall semester due to injury.

Crawford went 2-2 a week ago at the prestigious Midlands Championships to open his college career and showed his potential Saturday at the F&M Open with a third place finish.

Crawford suffered a pin at the hands of Anthony Perrotti of Rutgers before reeling off seven straight wins to claim third place.

He opened his run with a pin of Kalann Washington of Messiah in 5:00 before shutting out UMBC's Martin Mitchell in a 7-0 decision. Crawford would post a 13-5 major decision over Kyle Roddy of Princeton and follow up with a 2-0 decision of Roddy's teammate Brandon Rolnick to reach the wrestleback quarterfinals.

Crawford would pin Hofstra's Dalton Ahern in 4:10 to reach the semifinals where he held another opponent scoreless in a 3-0 decision over Columbia's Connor Sutton to reach the third place bout.

Lock Haven's Cody Copeland was waiting for Crawford in the third place bout and the Tar Heel freshman capped off a successful tournament with a 10-1 major decision over Copeland to claim third place.

Freshman heavyweight Cody Klempay suffered a pair of narrow decision setbacks on Saturday as he went 0-2 at the F&M Open after a 1-2 performance at the Midlands Championships.

Klempay opened with a 1-0 decision loss to Gardner-Webb's Justin Kozera before falling 2-0 at the hands of Cody Mason of Lock Haven.

Crawford and Klempay will return to action next week with the rest of the Tar Heel contingent as they head to Pennsylvania for three duals in two days against Michigan State, Clarion and Drexel.
