NEW YORK -- North Carolina sophomore midfielder Mikey Lopez signed a Generation adidas deal it was announced on Thursday by Major League Soccer. Lopez becomes the eighth Tar Heel to sign with MLS on a Generation adidas deal.
Lopez appeared in 46 matches during his two-year career as a Tar Heel and helped lead the Tar Heels to their second national title during his freshman campaign in 2011.
For his efforts, Lopez was named the 2011 ACC Freshman of the Year and would garner First Team All-ACC honors as a sophomore in 2012.
The Mission, Texas, native also picked up All-America honors from College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer this past season.
Lopez has been projected to go early in the MLS SuperDraft that is set for Jan. 17 in Indianapolis.
Lopez joins seven other Tar Heels to have signed a Generation adidas contract with MLS and the second in as many years to do so after Enzo Martinez signed a year ago.
A Generation adidas signing does not count against the MLS senior roster and the signee is guaranteed a scholarship to finish their college education.
