UNC Set For NCAA Third Round Action
Release: 11/23/2012

No. 9 seed North Carolina will return to action Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Tournament when Fairleigh Dickinson visits Fetzer Field for a 5 p.m. contest.

Sunday's meeting will be the third all-time between the Tar Heels and Knights as UNC holds a 1-0-1 series advantage. The sides first met during the 1982 regular season and played to a 1-1 draw.

Carolina downed Fairleigh Dickinson in the 2001 NCAA Tournament in a 3-2, triple overtime affair that saw UNC set an NCAA Tournament school record 40 shots. The Tar Heels would go on to win the first national championship in school history.

The two sides enter with similar offensive numbers as Carolina has netted 32 goals on the year and Fairleigh Dickinson owns 28. Both team's top goal scorer owns six this season, while another pair have tallied five goals apiece.

The Tar Heels hold the advantage on the defensive end as the national leaders in goals against have surrendered just six in 21 matches this season. Carolina posted its 16th shutout of the year last week against UMBC and now owns the 13th-most shutouts in a single season in NCAA history.

The winner of Sunday's match will head to the quarterfinal round and take on the winner of No. 16 seed Indiana and No. 1 seed Notre Dame.
