Farber Leads UNC At NCAA Regional
Release: 11/09/2012

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Lianne Farber lead the UNC women's cross country team to an overall fifth-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional with her individual fifth-place notch in 20:31.63. The men's team finished 11th and was led by Scott Morgan.

"Obviously we're thrilled with Lianne's finish today," said Coach Mark VanAlstyne after the race, "She's worked very hard to get to this point. To bounce back from the adversity of a poor finish at ACCs and qualify for her first finals in cross country I thought was huge. She did her race plan perfectly and has a fifth-place finish and nationals berth to show for it."

Ashley Miess contributed to the finish with her 6K time of 21:31.80 to finish 34th followed immediately by Annie LeHardy in 35th in 21:32.69. Sami Jorgensen race the course in 21:43.94 to place 47th while Karley Rempel and Malia Cali rounded out the Tar Heel finishes at 79th in 22:10.44 and 86th in 22:15.05, respectively. The Carolina women placed in the top-third amongst all 255 runners and fifth of 37 teams.

"On the women's side I thought we did better as a team through four places," Coach VanAlstyne added, "I would have loved to have had the additional fire power of Kylie McCoy and Emma Norman in there. We felt like that would have been what put us over the hump today. We've just got to get better on both sides."

Morgan placed 36th overall taking on the 10K course in 31:05.29. Morgan shattered his personal best by nearly two minutes with the time. Patrick Schellberg was next across the line for the Tar Heels placing 47th in a personal best 31:16.90, shedding over 50 seconds off his previous top time for a cross 10K.

Ryan Walling placed 60th in 31:34.07. Jack Driggs took 79th with a time of 31:56.01. John Raneri placed 114th in 32:36.77 and Isaac Presson rounded out the Tar Heels' six runners at 131st in 32:56.05.

"The men we're disappointed. I thought Scott Morgan had his best race as a collegiate but we just didn't get the support we needed from the other guys."

Farber will be awarded All-Region honors for her fifth-place finish and will go on to compete at the NCAA National Championships on Nov. 17th in Louisville, Ky., at E.P Tom Sawyer State Park.
