Garcia Earns ACC Freshman Of The Year
Release: 11/08/2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Freshman Danny Garcia led six Tar Heels who garnered All-ACC honors on Thursday as he became the second straight Tar Heel to be named the ACC Freshman of the Year.

Garcia joins sophomore Mikey Lopez who claimed the honor in 2011. Lopez and Garcia become the first Tar Heel duo to be named the ACC Freshman of the Year in back-to-back seasons since Temoc Suarez and Carey Talley accomplished the feat in 1993 and 1994.

The freshman forward picked up two more honors on Thursday as he was named to the All-ACC Second Team along with being named to the All-ACC Freshman Team.

Sophomore Mikey Lopez and Boyd Okwuonu were the only underclassmen to earn All-ACC First Team honors as Lopez was pegged for the midfield and Okwuonu for the defense.

Lopez has been responsible for two goals and an assist from his midfield location and has helped propel Carolina's possession style of play.

Okwuonu has anchored the top defense in the country as he and the Tar Heel backline have posted a 0.22 goals against average.

The Tar Heels placed three members on the All-ACC Second Team led by the nation's goals against leader in goalkeeper Scott Goodwin. It is the second straight All-ACC honor for Goodwin who has posted 14 shutouts in 2012, tied for the nation's lead.

Junior forward Andy Craven was selected for the second team as he leads the Tar Heels with six goals and 17 points thanks to five assists.

Garcia joins Goodwin and Craven on the second team after finding the back of the net four times, including three straight games, and leads UNC with six assists.

The All-ACC Freshman Team features a pair of Tar Heels for the second straight year as Garcia is joined by defender Jonathan Campbell. The Greensboro, N.C., native has started all 18 games at center back for a Tar Heel defense that has surrendered just four goals.

Maryland's Patrick Mullins was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and Duke's Sebastien Ibeagha was named the Defensive Player of the Year. The Terps head coach Sasho Cirovski was named the Coach of the Year.
