FLUSHING, N.Y. --- Zoe De Bruycker, Gina Suarez-Malaguti, Ashley Dai and Whitney Kay will represent the North Carolina women's tennis team this weekend at the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Play begins Thursday with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
De Bruycker, Suarez-Malaguti and Kay are each in the 32-player singles field after earning at-large berths.
De Bruycker, who was the singles runner-up at last month's USTA/ITA Carolina Region Championships in Winston-Salem, was an ITA at-large selection due to her high national ranking and performance so far this fall. She will open play Thursday against Santa Clara's Katie Le. The two met earlier this fall at the ITA All-American Championships, with Le winning in straight sets.
Suarez-Malaguti, who is a perfect 7-0 with wins over two top-20 opponents already, was also chosen as an at-large pick. She will face USC's Sabrina Santamaria in the opening round. Santamaria, the No. 8 player in the country, defeated Lauren McHale in the ITA All-American Championships opening round.
Kay, who was the first singles alternate and made the field after another player withdrew, opens singles against No. 8 seed Lauren Herring of Georgia. Kay and her classmate Dai, who were doubles semifinalists at regionals and are 9-1 this fall, earned the USTA wild card to the 20-team doubles field. They received a bye into the round of 16 and will face the winner of the match between Tereza Bekerova and Paige Miles of Utah and Penn's Sonya Latycheva-Agustina Sol-Eskenazi.
