CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carolina softball senior Haleigh Dickey spent time in Nicaragua this summer as part of the Global Medical Training program.

An exercise and sport science major, Dickey plans to attend nursing school and pursue a career in the medical field. She sat down with GoHeels.com recently to share about her time in Nicaragua, what she gained from volunteering there, and how that experience will prepare for a future in nursing.

Background on GMT:

Participants travel to Central American countries and communities where there is a great need for medical attention. Upon arrival, students will receive specific orientation and training for the clinics and the trip.

GMT's approach is student-centered teaching/learning and active student participation in the process of medical assessments and treatments. Learn by doing. We will frame this within the context of various health care systems. We will analyze the comparative fairness, goodness, outcomes, dollar value, and failings of various systems.
