MADISON, Wis. - Lianne Farber continues her stellar season as the lead runner for the Carolina women's cross country team, placing 17th at the elite Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Friday in a 6K personal record 20:05. Ryan Walling ran strong on the men's side, leading the Tar Heels with an 8K PR of 24:00 to place 44th in the team competition.
Farber kept pace with the chasing pack to score for the Carolina women, who placed 28th at a meet bursting with the nation's best runners and collegiate teams.
All six members of the women's squad recorded new personal bests in the 6K. Ashley Miess held down the two-spot for the Tar Heels, placing 118th in 20:54. Annie LeHardy smashed her previous best in the 6K, racing 21:08 to place 159th. Sami Jorgensen placed 187th in 21:19, Karley Rempel at 226th in 21:33 and Malia Cali in 21:41 to place 242nd. The women's field consisted of 48 teams and 327 runners.
On the men's side, Ryan Walling showed guts and perseverance with his 44th-place finish for the team score breaking his personal best in the 8K by nearly a minute. The Tar Heel men placed 29th out of 45 teams.
Jack Driggs was next up for the Tar Heels with a time of 24:18 to finish 105th. Steve Magnuson and Scott Morgan both clocked in at 24:34 taking 166th and 167th, respectively. Patrick Schellberg ran his 8K in 24:40 to place 193rd and Mark Derrick placed 245th in 25:09. Isaac Presson was unable to finish the race though still putting in a strong showing through the first 5K.
No. 5 Iowa State took the women's team race top spot followed by a slue of ranked schools to complete the top 20 finishes of the 48 women's teams in attendance. The men's side was more lop-sided for the team scoring with seven unranked schools placing in the top-20 pushing No. 1 Wisconsin to a disappointing 17th in their home competition. No. 8 Stanford won the men's side.
