CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Freshman Danny Garcia scored his first career goal in the 41st minute to lead No. 2 UNC past Davidson Tuesday night at Fetzer Field.
Craven made a deft one-touch pass to Garcia on his right who tracked the ball down and was one-on-one with the Davidson goalkeeper.
Garcia chipped the ball over Matt Pacifici and into the back of the net to put Carolina in front 1-0. The tally was the freshman's first of the year.
The Tar Heels dominated possession throughout the first half leading up to Garcia's score in the 41st minute.
Freshman Alex Olofson earned the start in the midfield and helped the Tar Heels force the issue throughout the evening. Senior Daniel Tannous filled in along the backline and helped the Tar Heels to their ACC-leading ninth shutout of the year.
Andy Craven came off the bench to register five shots with three on frame, including a shot late in the second half that ricocheted off the left post and out for a goal kick.
The Tar Heels finished with 15 shots on the night, while holding the Wildcats to one attempt. The Carolina midfield kept possession of the ball throughout the evening and threatened the Davidson defense on several occasions.
Carolina ran its current win streak to six matches with the victory and the Tar Heels are unblemished over their last seven. The Tar Heels also became the fifth team in NCAA history to post a 35-match home unbeaten streak with the win over Davidson.
The Tar Heels will now take to the road for their next two contests with a trip to College of Charleston on Saturday before visiting No. 1 Maryland on Friday, Oct. 19.
