CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Michael Tagliaferri, a member of the gold medal winning U.S. U19 World Championships team this past summer and a freshman midfielder at the University of North Carolina, will have shoulder surgery in the middle of October. Tagliaferri will miss the remainder of UNC's fall ball schedule this month, which includes a tournament at the Landon School (with exhibitions against Cornell and Penn State) on October 7 and a scrimmage against Ohio State in Baltimore October 14.
Tagliaferri suffered the injury during fall ball practice. He is expected back in the spring but the exact date of his return is speculative and will be based solely on recovery time and Tagliaferri's reactions to the surgery."This is a really tough break for Michael," said UNC head coach Joe Breschi. "Tags was having a wonderful fall for us and really learning our system. He was also coming off a great summer with the U.S. U19 Team, winning a world title on the national stage. Our #1 concern is Michael's health and long-term ability to recover to 100 percent. We will look forward to welcoming him back to the field when he is ready to compete again."
