SOPHOMORE (2009)
Spent second season in the Tar Heels' weekend rotation, making 13 starts in 21 appearances • Posted a 7-2 record, one save and a 5.40 ERA in 75 innings • Struck out 81 and walked just 42 • Went 2-2 in ACC play with 41 strikeouts in 42 innings • Made a pair of NCAA Tournament starts and went 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA and six strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings • Claimed first career NCAA Tournament win against Dartmouth May 29 after allowing two runs on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings • Combined to allow just five earned runs over 21 innings against Boston College, Clemson and Dartmouth for a 2.14 ERA and 16 strikeouts in three starts leading up to the College World Series • Went six innings against No. 13 Clemson and allowed just three runs in the ACC Tournament May 23 • Earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors May 18 for with finest outing of the season at Boston College May 16 • Came within one out of his first career complete-game shutout, worked a career-best 8 2/3 innings and held the Eagles to one run • Fanned eight for second-highest strikeout total of the season and most since the opening weekend versus VMI • Tossed seven innings in a win over No. 7 Miami April 19 • Against the Hurricanes, allowed just six hits and struck out five to earn first victory in a start since Feb. 28 • Fanned four in two innings of relief at UNC Wilmington March 24 and earned a win versus Old Dominion in relief April 1 • Pitched in relief at Virginia Tech March 15 and earned first career save • Stuck out five and allowed two runs on two hits and two walks over four innings versus the Hokies • Held No. 18 Clemson to one run on four hits over seven innings but had to settle for a no-decision March 8 • Won twice in the Seton Hall series after tossing three scoreless innings in a staff day Feb. 28 and working the ninth in game two of the Feb. 27 doubleheader to earn a win after fanning two batters in the ninth • Struck out 11 of 19 batters faced in just five innings and allowed three runs on three hits against VMI Feb. 22. • Set down 12 straight batters at one point against the Keydets. FRESHMAN (2008)
One of the nation's top freshmen starters • Claimed freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball, the NCBWA (second team) and Rivals.com (first team) • Pitched in 19 games and made 16 starts, primarily on Sundays • Went 7-2 with a 2.79 ERA over 67 2/3 innings • Struck out 80 and walked 47 • Held the opposition to a .214 average • Went 3-1 with a 3.90 ERA in eight ACC starts • Made three NCAA Tournament starts with nine strikeouts over a total of 10 innings • With seven victories, tallied the most wins by a UNC rookie since Daniel Bard equaled the Tar Heel freshman record with eight in 2004 • Earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the ACC Tournament after fanning a career-best 13 over eight shutout innings against Wake Forest May 23 • Held the Demon Deacons to just two hits and a walk • The 13 Ks were the most by a Tar Heel since Andrew Miller struck out 13 at Georgia Tech in 2006 • Finished the season with three games with eight-plus strikeouts • Struck out five over five strong innings versus No. 8 Fresno State in the College World Series June 21 • Held No. 2 Florida State to just one hit over 4 2/3 innings April 27 but issued six walks and struck out five to help the Tar Heels clinch the series • Matched a then-career high with eight strikeouts and just one earned run over 5 1/3 innings against Boston College April 20 • Made second relief appearance against Charlotte April 16 and earned a win after striking out two in the 12th inning • Went four shutout innings versus UNC Greensboro April 1 to earn a victory in a staff outing • Allowed one run on five hits and struck out four over six innings in a win at Maryland March 23 • Tossed 6 1/3 shutout innings, allowed only four hits and struck out six in a win over Virginia Tech March 16 • Earned first career victory against William & Mary in a March 4 staff outing • Held the Tribe to three hits and struck out five over four innings • Struck out eight over 4 2/3 innings in first career appearance against Old Dominion Feb. 26. Summer 2008: Pitched in nine games, making one start, for the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod League • Logged a 0.83 ERA and a 1-1 record • Struck out 29 and walked just 11 batters in 21 2/3 innings • Rated the league's No. 3 prospect by Baseball America.

FITCH HIGH SCHOOL
Third-round pick (118th overall) by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2007 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft • Earned prep All-America honors while playing for his father at Fitch High School in Groton, Conn. • As a senior, went 6-1 with a 0.64 ERA over 54 2/3 innings with 112 strikeouts • Named Connecticut state player of the year by the Hartford Courant and by Gatorade • Rated as the nation's No. 1 high school prospect by Baseball America in Feb. 2007 • Claimed high school All-America honors from Aflac, Under Armour, PlayStation and Louisville Slugger • Three-time preseason All-America • Three-time all-state pick and a four-time all-conference choice • Set school career records with 315 strikeouts, 21 victories and a 1.08 ERA • Added Fitch career records with 93 RBI and 118 hits • Pitched for Team USA in the 2006 IBFA AAA Junior World Championships in Cuba • Captured the 2007 Connie Mack World Series title as a member of the Midland Redskins • Also played two years of basketball.

Matthew Edward Harvey is the son of Edward and Jackie Harvey • Born March 27, 1989, in New London, Conn. • Has two older sisters, Jocelyn and Jessica • Majoring in sports administration at Carolina • Father played baseball and football at Connecticut and played in the 1972 College World Series.
