2012 Preseason Highlights: Serves as team tri-captain with Alex Rafiee and Brennan Boyajian...preseason ITA singles ranking No. 9 and No. 6 in doubles with Brennan Boyajian...advanced to 3rd-round of ITA All-American Championship competition before falling to No. 71 Roy Kalmanovich of Illinois (6-4, 3-6, 6-2)...along with Boyajian, defeated Maryland's Stefan/Wyss (8-4) to win the UVA Ranked 4+1 Invite...following 1st-round victory over Jamie Whiteford of William & Mary (6-3, 7-6) in the National Indoor Collegiate Championships, Hernandez fell in 2nd-round competition to Illinois' No. 8 Dennis Nevolo (6-3, 7-6).
Sophomore Season (2010-2011) Recap: Finished season with 30-13 singles mark including an 11-9 record against nationally-ranked ITA opponents while playing primarily at No. 1 singles...earned record of 10-2 in ACC play...was named All-ACC for the second straight year...also named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll...was an ITA first-team All-America...was 16-7 in dual matches, all the No. 1 spot...his singles win at No. 1 flight lifted Tar Heels to 4-3 win over Duke...lost close-fought contest to former singles champion Bradley Klahn of Stanford in 3rd-round of NCAA singles tournament...carried a ranking of 22nd nationally into the NCAA singles tournament and finished 20th in the post NCAA rankings...posted a landmark upset win over ITA No. 7 Alexandre Lacroix of Florida in the 2nd-round to reach the Round of 16...in 2010 preseason play, Hernandez started the fall in the Dominican Republic helping his home country in their attempt to qualify for the Davis Cup...won the doubles championship with Joey Burkhardt at the UVA+1 Fall Invitational...reached the finals of the ITA Carolinas Regional in both singles and doubles...lost in the third round of the D'Novo/ITA All-American Tennis Championships to UVA's Sanam Singh.
Freshman Season (2009-10) Recap: Played mostly at No. 2 singles, compiling a 18-4 dual match record and finished the season ranked No. 56 by the ITA...went 7-3 in the ACC and earned All-ACC honors...biggest upset came when ranked No. 78 against No. 9 Sanam Singh of UVA, 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-2...also clinched dual match victories over Virginia Tech, Clemson and Georgia Tech...amassed a 18-8 doubles record playing almost exclusively at No. 3 doubles...singles winning percentage (.708) was highest of those who participated in more than four dual matches.
Prep Highlights: Ranked 37th in the world junior rankings by the International Tennis Federation...reached the round of 16 in the qualifying for the U.S. Open Junior Tennis Championships...played in the Wimbledon Junior Championships...reached the round of 32 in the main draw of the Roland Garros Junior Championships...won the JITIC tournament in Monterrey, Mexico...made the finals of the Copa Merengue tournament in Santo Domingo, D.R...made the finals of the Barranquilla Junior Tennis Tournament in Barranquilla, Colombia.
